ScanCafe
I have tons of old slide and I really do not have time to scan most of them myself so I was trying out service of ScanCafe and sent about 50 slides to scan. Thier prices are pretty good and service is Ok I guess, but I would take all that “we do scans manually…” speech with pound of salt. For example, among slides I sent there were two almost identical landscape shots taken literally within one minute of the same view and their look pretty much the same but scans of those two slides are drastically different – one is all greenish and another is OK. It seems to me that they either didn’t do white balance at all or whoever did it was drunk or daltonic because it was first thing that jumped at me when I got results that colors all over the place.
The technical quality was acceptable and matched the price. I’m sure had I scaned them manually they would come out far better. Their scanning center is baaed in India and your scans get send over there for processing which is probably how they can give such a good price but clearly at expense of quality.
The price is very attractive and if you looking to digitize some old memories before they completely fade but not have time to do it yourself (my situation) then ScanCafe could be a solution. Plus little PhotoShop can go long way.
Here is one of the scans, it’s from slide taken at Camp Hazard on Kautz Glacier route up the Mt.Rainier in WA.
